What To Do in St Anton Alps

StAnton_WP-1200x600

Ski the Alpine villages where downhill skiing was invented.

St Anton is one of five picturesque towns within the Arlberg, a legendary ski region in the Austrian Alps, considered the cradle of downhill skiing. Fine dining, luxurious accommodations and, of course, world-class skiing are standard here. It’s the perfect combination of quaint and luxuriant, with a huge dash of adrenaline thrown in, which gives it a unique and engaging atmosphere you’ll never forget. Schedule your visit before ski season ends, and see for yourself why the Arlberg is loved ski destination. With so many thrills to choose from, we thought we’d help you plan your week by mentioning a few of our favorites.

The Largest Ski-School in the World

Take advantage of the expertise found at the StAntonLift_WPArlberg Ski School, which was founded in 1921 by Hannes Schneider, the pioneer of the alpine downhill technique. It is here in the St Anton Alps that you’ll find the largest ski school in the world, with 300 instructors ready to help you hone your abilities – after all, Austria has the most Olympic alpine medals of any nation in the world. Whether you’re stuck in snow-plough, or excited for your first ski tour off-piste, you’ll find there is always something new to learn. Group lessons are available for both skiers and boarders, or schedule some time with a private instructor.

A Slice of Alpine History in Zürs

A ski pass at St. Anton with the Arlberg Card gives you access to each of the five villages that gave birth to downhill skiing: Lech, Zürs, St. Anton, St. Christoph and Stuben. Each village has its own unique charm. There are more than 80 inclines and lifts in the region which grant access to 170 miles of slopes. For a historical treat, head to nearby Zürs, where the first drag lift in Austria was built. From Zürs, ski the famous White Ring to Lech where you can stop and shop in town, or enjoy a fondue chinoise at Die Stube in the Hotel Arlberg. If you have time, complete the Weisse Ring Circuit, or just head back to St. Anton for the notable après-ski scene.

Challenge Yourself with Heli-Skiing

StAntonSunset_WPIf untouched, deep powder is what you crave, try heli-skiing or an off-piste ski tour through The Powder Club. Some of the most beautiful areas in the Arlberg are only accessible by helicopter, or on foot. All skiers and boarders are taken through avalanche training and a backcountry safety course before starting out. Knowledgeable guides will plan your tour to individually fit your experience and fitness level.

Skip the Skis, Take a Toboggan

For a thrilling experience that will leave you breathless, make a toboggan and dinner reservation through Alber’s Rodelalm. Halfway down a swift black run, pull your toboggan off to the side of the slope to enjoy a delicious dinner at this Gäste Haus. We recommend the pork knuckle, which is big enough to serve two, and a side of fried potatoes. Try some schnapps or the Heisse Witwe (Hot Widow) to warm you up while you listen to local bands playing a mixture of traditional Austrian music and modern tunes. Or you can warm your fingers outside around a big fire pit on the terrace while watching the light fade from the majestic Alps all around you.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride

For a serene and leisurely experience, schedule a horse-drawn sleigh to guide you through the beautiful Verwall Valley. Enjoy snuggling under heavy blankets with your loved ones as you take in the grandeur of the region at a relaxing pace. Stop for coffee and cake at the Verwall Inn before heading back home again. A regularly scheduled ride will take 45-60 minutes; or private arrangements can be made if you wish to create a personalized event.
